UK Ranked 31st In The World For Broadband Speed

The UK has been ranked 31st in the world for its broadband speed, and while that puts it ahead of 158 other nations, it appears it has fallen behind many of its European counterparts.

In the league table created by Cable.co.uk, the UK has an average broadband speed of 16.51Mbps. By contrast, Singapore, which tops the list, boasts average speeds of 55.13Mbps.

When it comes to our European neighbours, Sweden, the Netherlands, Latvia, Norway, Belgium and Switzerland all made it into the top ten, while the likes of Lithuania, Romania, Estonia, Portugal and Finland are all in the top 20 and well above the UK.

Consumer telecoms analyst at the company Dan Howdle said that this research gives us a “fresh perspective” on our broadband network.

“Relatively speaking, we’re near the top of the table. However many of those ahead of us – some a long way ahead – are our neighbours both in the EU and wider Europe,” he stated.

Mr Howdle added that while the UK government should continue to push for the roll out of superfast broadband, it could be worth looking to the countries above us in this league table to see what lessons we could learn as we look to improve our infrastructure.

Of course, the speed highlighted in this study is the average speed for the whole country and there are significant regional discrepancies.

Many of us don’t even seem to be bothered about the speed of our broadband connection, with research from GoCompare Broadband earlier this year revealing that 46 per cent of Brits haven’t tested the speed of their connection.

Having a fast broadband connection could make it much easier for you to work with Voip phone service providers to introduce technology that can make life easier for your business and staff.
