New Receiver Could See High Speed Broadband In All Homes
A super fast broadband connection is ideal for those looking for the best voice over IP providers, but for many people, access to these high speed networks is still limited. However, this problem could soon be something of the past with the invention of a new optical receiver which could revolutionise the industry.
According to The Engineer, the new receiver is designed to be used in optical access networks, which is used to connect users to their service providers.
At present, broadband speeds in the UK lack far behind those in other countries, however, as technology moves on, we run the risk of being left behind. By 2025, it’s estimated we’ll require broadband that is 100 times faster in order to keep up with the demands of ultra high quality video and online gambling games.
Lead researcher Dr Sezer Erkılınç, from University College London, said that while 300 mb/s speeds were available to some in the UK, the average speed is 36 mb/s:”UK broadband speeds are woefully slow compared to many other countries, but this is not a technical limitation,” he explained.
The receiver, he says, is a simple design, however it uses a dedicated wavelength, so that the signal stays as strong no matter how many people are online.
While the device has been tested in London, there are some limitations that need to be ironed out. The team at UCL will be trying to reduce the electric power requirements of the technique, which is the main barrier to it becoming commercially viable.
