Full Mobile Coverage To Come For London Underground?
Anyone doing business in London in the near future could soon find that it’s much easier to get work done on the move, thanks to Transport for London (TfL) and plans to provide full 4G mobile coverage on the Underground network.
WiFi has been available on some routes since the London 2012 Olympics but since then not much progress has been made to roll this out further, the Guardian reports. There is currently no service available on moving trains in tunnels, although you can now access mobile internet at numerous underground station platforms in the capital.
Talks are currently ongoing between TfL and telecoms infrastructure companies, with bids expected to be invited after the general election. Sadiq Khan, London mayor, thinks the introduction of this particular service will help bring London in line with other major cities around the world, such as New York, Paris and Berlin, which all have the tech in place to allow phone calls on metro networks.
“We are keen to offer full mobile phone coverage for our customers. The introduction of this would need to be commercially viable and would follow engagement with staff and customers,” a TfL spokesperson was quoted by the news source as saying.
A recent study by analyst OpenSignal and consumer watchdog Which? found that London is actually one of the worst places in the UK for mobile 4G coverage, coming in the bottom five. The best places for coverage were found to be Middlesbrough/Teesside, Sheffield, Sunderland, Leicester and Leeds/West Yorkshire.
