FTTP Broadband ‘Best Future-Proof Option’
While a growing number of businesses and regions in the UK are adopting fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband, its use needs to be extended within the country.
That is the opinion of Mark Heraghty, non-executive chairman of civil engineering firm John Henry Group, who recently told ISPreview.co.uk that FTTP lines are the “only real future proof” broadband system for the UK.
He explained that although 96 per cent of the country currently has a superfast broadband network, in the form of hybrid fibre/copper connections, these do have their limitations. High-definition streaming services in particular will place a strain on these networks.
However, he warned that there are a number of barriers to the installation of FTTP around the UK, including being granted access to land to lay the cables and a lack of trained professionals to carry out the network builds.
Mr Heraghty commented: “There simply isn’t the quality resource available to realise the ambitions of all ISPs at the present time.”
Earlier this month the UK government named six areas that will be trialling FTTP broadband providing speeds of close to one gigabit per second (gbps).
Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, West Sussex, Coventry and Warwickshire, Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset, West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester will all receive investment to trial the rollout of this technology.
£10 million is set to be spent on the projects, which is part of the £200 million scheme announced by the government to bring the fastest and most reliable broadband to homes and businesses around the country.
This is all good news for Voip phone service providers for business, as well as any companies that rely on Voip services.
