Fibre Lamp Post Could Boost Signal

The best VOIP for small businesses is dependent on good, stable signal so your customers can get hold of you whenever they need, with no disruption.

As we have already covered on this blog, internet coverage isn’t great in the UK and over half of broadband customers have poor signal. These problems are compounded in rural areas, though even some urban areas suffer from poor signal as well.

Now Samsung is bringing out a new technology that could help plug the gap in areas that suffer from poor internet connection.

Using 5G (the follow up to 4G), Samsung has developed a gadget that fits to lamp posts in areas with poor signal, which will deliver of 1Gbps signals over high-frequency wavelengths.

Samsung describes it as going the extra mile to reach areas with poor signal, though it actually only boosts for 300-400 metres.

The benefit of this new way of getting internet access is that the technology is capable of figuring out which is the best signal to send to a particular device, and where to send it.

The use of 5G means that speed will be similar to broadband.

Samsung’s VP and head of advanced communications lab Wonil Roh stated: “Will 5G kill broadband? No. Fibre and 5G are complementary. For the last mile coverage, connection can be well served wirelessly and Samsung wants to be the company to do it.”

The new 5G standard is expected to be rolled out in 2018. You can read more about the new Samsung technology in Alphr.com.
