Call Made To Bring In Taller Masts To Improve Mobile Coverage
In a bid to help rural businesses in the UK enjoy better mobile coverage and connectivity, the call has been made to relax planning laws in the country so taller masts can be rolled out.
The British Chambers of Commerce’s director general, Dr Adam Marshall, made this suggestion following research from the organisation revealing businesses across the UK – in particular rural areas – are experiencing ‘not-spots’ in mobile coverage.
It was found that 70 per cent experience this, areas where there is no mobile coverage by any operator. Partial not-spots are also an issue for many, where some coverage is available but not from all networks. Some 91 per cent of rural companies report these issues, compared to 56 per cent of businesses in inner cities.
Dr Marshall said: “All across the country businesspeople complain about patchy mobile coverage and unreliable internet connections in their local areas. Time and again, I hear from frustrated businesspeople who can’t use their mobiles or access the internet when they need to – basic requirements for companies to work on the move, trade online, and connect with customers and suppliers.”
Earlier this month (May 2nd), further research from Which? revealed the best and worst cities in the UK for 4G access, with Middlesbrough coming top with 83 per cent availability. The worst places were found to be Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth, Cardiff, Nottingham and London.
