BT Openreach Seeks Support for Full Fibre Broadband Network

BT Openreach, which provides broadband and telephony infrastructure to about 30 million homes and businesses in the UK, has issued a call for support to help it build a full fibre broadband network. Its aim is to cement the UK’s position as a leading digital economy in the G20 – and now a consultation has been launched with communications provider customers to see if there is enough demand for a large-scale network.

Full fibre networks are usually more efficient, stable and reliable, which means people experience fewer faults and more predictable speeds than they might see when using copper and fibre broadband technology. Speeds of up to 1Gbps can also be supported, which is enough to download an entire TV show in HD in just five seconds!

Chief executive of Openreach Clive Selley said: ““By using new techniques, we recently halved the cost of delivering ‘full fibre’ infrastructure, but building a large-scale network is still a huge commercial, technical and logistical challenge that’s going to need real ingenuity, flexibility and coordination across government and industry.”

He went on to add that fibre-to-the-premises networks – or full fibre – could be rolled out to up to ten million homes and businesses by the mid-2020s.

Given that broadband speeds here in the UK do seem somewhat tempestuous depending on where you are in the country, full fibre networks could really do a lot revolutionise both households and companies, perhaps even enabling you to invest in business VoIP phone services once your connection is more reliable and quicker.
