Broadband ‘Rush Hour’ Speeds To Be Revealed

Broadband users looking for the best VOIP service for business may soon be able to see what broadband speeds look like during ‘rush hours’ according to new proposals from watchdog Ofcom.

The idea of the scheme is to help bridge the gap between the speeds promised by broadband providers and the speeds they actually receive when using the service. Ofcom say that customers should be able to see not just the best speeds, but also the average and minimum speeds for a similar household before they commit to a provider, according to The Telegraph.

At present, customers will see a range of speeds they might experience throughout the day – but given most of us the internet at home during the evening and weekend, speeds during weekdays are not necessarily representative of speeds consumers most regularly achieve.

Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom’s Consumer Group Director, says that broadband shoppers deserve to know what they’re buying: “We plan to close the gap between what’s advertised and what’s delivered, giving customers a fuller picture before they commit to a contract,” she says.

The new rules will make it so that customers will see a minimum guaranteed speed during busy peak hours, as well as a range that might be expected, meaning you’ll know from the outset the worst case scenario when it comes to broadband speeds.

And if consumers receive speeds under this minimum? Ofcom says they’ll be able to leave their contract
