Broadband Grants For Businesses Now Available
If you live and work in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, Bristol (including bath and north-east Somerset), Coventry and Warwickshire or the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, you can now sign up to take part in a voucher pilot to have gigabit broadband installed.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has made grants of up to £3,000 available as part of a £2 million trial that can be used to pay for the installation of gigabit speed connections.
The benefits of this kind of connection include enabling widespread use of videoconferencing, uploading and downloading huge files in seconds and allowing companies in remote areas to compete on a level playing field in terms of technology with those in major cities already enjoying full fibre connectivity.
Matt Hancock, minister for digital, said: “A world-class digital communications network is essential to ensure the UK’s future competitiveness in the global market and its ability to attract investment. Faster and more reliable connections are transforming the way we live and work, and better broadband supports businesses to grow and become more productive.”
Ofcom has also just announced that broadband and landline customers will be able to get money back from their providers if something goes wrong without having to put in a claim, benefiting millions who suffer from poor service.
Issues may include missed appointments, slow repairs and delayed installations – and customers will be able to get credit on their accounts without even having to ask. Currently, compensation is paid out in about 15 per cent of cases and even then it’s usually just a small amount of money.
